Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit remarked that the nations voting against the United Nations General Assembly's (UNGA) resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip are "on the wrong side of history."
"The endorsement of the draft resolution by the majority of 153 votes in the General Assembly, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, truly represents the official stance of international public opinion, not the Security Council. Those who opposed or abstained from voting (10+23) find themselves on the wrong side of history," stated the secretary-general of the Arab League in a statement posted on his official social media page.
The UN General Assembly voted on Tuesday to adopt a resolution submitted by Egypt and Mauritania, urging an immediate ceasefire in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone. The document garnered support from 153 states, including Russia. However, 10 countries, including Israel and the United States, voted against it. Twenty-three states, including the UK, Germany, and Ukraine, abstained from voting. The UNGA also rejected a US amendment calling for the condemnation of the Palestinian Hamas movement. Furthermore, an Austrian amendment specifying that hostages are held by Hamas and other groups was also rejected.
