Strengthening the position of extreme right-wing forces in Israeli political life will have the most serious negative consequences for stability in the region. This opinion was expressed Wednesday by Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
"With the rise of the Israeli right-wing forces, systematic escalation and their [right-wing forces'] hegemony in Israeli politics will soon follow," said Aboul Gheit, quoted by Al-Yawm al-Sabia news portal. According to him, "the emergence of extremist elements on the Israeli political scene will have the most serious negative consequences for stability and security in the Middle East."
As the League secretary-general pointed out, the level of violence in Israeli-occupied Palestinian lands has increased significantly since the beginning of this year. "If such actions by Israeli forces are not stopped, the Palestinians may soon express express powerful discontent," Aboul Gheit noted. He believes that "by driving the Palestinian people into a stalemate and constantly threatening their security and depriving the Palestinians of a political future, Israel is creating a dangerous situation that benefits neither side."
The League secretary-general called on the world community to intervene immediately to "protect the civilians of Palestinian lands and stop the Israeli military's arbitrariness."
Aboul Gheit's statement was made on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which was established by a UN General Assembly (GA) resolution on December 2, 1977. The date was chosen because on November 29, 1947, the UNGA adopted one of the key documents of the Palestinian-Israeli settlement - resolution 181 on the partition of Palestine. It provided for creating two independent states on the territory of Palestine - Arab and Jewish, and established a special international regime for Jerusalem. The Solidarity Day is intended to unite the efforts of the international community to ensure the right of the Palestinian people to obtain state independence, return the refugees to their homes, which they were forced to leave during the years of conflict.
