Armenia and Azerbaijan begin exchange of prisoners

14 December 2020

Baku and Yerevan started an exchange of prisoners with the participation of Russian peacekeepers, the Azerbaijani State Commission for Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons reported.

They specified that the agreement on the exchange was reached with the participation of international organizations and command of Russian peacekeeping forces.

Press secretary of the Armenian Prime Minister Mane Gevorgyan said on Facebook that Yerevan is waiting for the first group of prisoners to return.

Earlier on Monday, the ombudsman of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Artak Beglaryan told RIA Novosti that about 60 servicemen from the region are being held captive by Azerbaijan, but Baku refused to give exact numbers.

Beglaryan called the issue of a prisoner exchange between Armenia and Azerbaijan "the most sensitive problem of recent months," but he did not specify how long it might take.
