Armenian authorities to appeal to Russia, CSTO and UN Security Council over aggravation on border

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan held an emergency session of Armenia's Security Council in regard to the aggravation on the border with Azerbaijan. The Armenian Security Council decided to appeal to Russia to invoke the provisions of the Treaty of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance related to the aggravation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. This was reported on Tuesday night by the press service of the Armenian cabinet of ministries. 


"A decision has been made to make an official appeal to the Russian Federation to invoke the provisions of the Treaty of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance. There will also be an appeal to the Collective Security Treaty Organization and the UN Security Council in connection with the aggression against the sovereign territory of Armenia," the government said.


Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan and National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan attended the emergency meeting chaired by Pashinyan. The parties discussed further steps to counter Azerbaijan's actions that began at midnight against Armenia's sovereign territory. 


Earlier, the Armenian defense ministry said that at 00:05 on September 13, units of Azerbaijani forces opened heavy fire in the direction of Goris, Sotq and Jermuk using artillery, large-caliber and small arms fire.
