Assad confirms support for Russia in Ukraine conflict

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad held a meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin, during which he confirmed Damascus' support for Moscow's position on the situation in Ukraine. This was stated in a statement released on Monday by the Syrian leader's office.

 

In particular, al-Assad "confirmed Syria's support for Russia's position on the situation in Ukraine." In addition, the president of the Arab republic said his country opposes "all hostile" actions of the West towards Moscow in connection with the Ukrainian crisis.

 

Speaking about the situation in Syria, al-Assad stressed the failure of Western attempts to undermine the Syrian government's efforts to restore security and stability throughout the Arab republic. According to him, these efforts meet the aspirations of the Syrian people.

 

According to the report, during the meeting, the sides discussed "relations between Syria and Russia and coordination between them, especially in light of recent events, as well as the problem of fighting terrorism and joint efforts of the two countries on the issue of returning Syrian refugees to their homeland."

 

Vershinin was quoted as saying that he "highly assessed Syria's recent political successes at the inter-Arab and international levels," and emphasized Moscow's unwavering position in supporting Damascus' efforts to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian state.
