Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has congratulated Alexander Lukashenko on winning the presidential election in Belarus, the BelTA news agency reported on Wednesday.

"It is with the greatest joy that I convey to you my sincere and heartfelt congratulations on your victory in the presidential election. I wish you further success in leading the country, promoting progress and prosperity for the benefit of our friendly people," the message reads.

In addition, the Syrian President noted that the re-election to a new presidential term provides the governments of Belarus and Syria with "new opportunities to strengthen cooperation in all spheres and raise relations to a new level in the interests of the two friendly countries and peoples."

Earlier, leaders of many countries, including China and Russia, congratulated Lukashenko on his election victory. At the same time, on August 11, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrel, on behalf of the Foreign Ministers of all 27 EU countries, issued a statement saying that the EU does not consider the elections in Belarus neither free nor fair.
