Assad Signs Decree for 100% Pay Raise for Public Sector Workers and Military Personnel

17 August 2023

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has signed two decrees aimed at providing financial relief to the country's citizens. The first decree grants a 100% bonus to the monthly salaries of government employees and military personnel. The second decree increases pension payments for retired and disabled civilians by 100%. Additionally, civil servants, public sector employees, and municipal workers in education and healthcare will receive extra monthly allowances.

These measures are set to take effect on September 1, with the intention of mitigating the financial impact of rising costs for essential goods and food. Prices for these items had increased by 100% by the beginning of August. The economic challenges facing Syria have been exacerbated by sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union, which have placed a significant burden on the population.

As of August 15, the Central Bank of Syria established a new exchange rate of 10,300 Syrian pounds to one US dollar. In comparison, just a year ago, the exchange rate was 3,015 Syrian pounds to one US dollar. These economic measures reflect the Syrian government's efforts to address the financial hardships faced by its citizens amidst challenging circumstances.
