The next round of Syria talks in the Astana format will take place in Kazakhstan's capital on November 11-12, according to Kazakhstan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The agenda includes bilateral and trilateral consultations on the first day, followed by continued discussions on November 12, which will conclude with a plenary session and a final press conference.
The main issues to be addressed during the meeting include the evolving regional situation around Syria, efforts toward a comprehensive resolution, current conditions "on the ground" in Syria, and confidence-building measures such as the release of hostages and the search for missing persons.
The Syrian conflict, ongoing since 2011, has seen Astana-format negotiations since 2017. These talks are facilitated by Russia, Iran, and Turkey as guarantor countries in the peace process, with participation from representatives of both the Syrian government and opposition, as well as the United Nations and observer countries including Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq. The upcoming session will mark the 22nd meeting in this format.
In October, Mikhail Bogdanov, Russian Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister, noted that the next meeting would happen before the end of 2024.
