Astana talks on Syria to be held on June 20-21

Regular talks on Syria in the Astana format will be held in the Kazakh capital on June 20-21. This was reported by the press service of the Kazakhstan MFA.


"On June 20-21, 2023, the city of Astana will host the next, 20th international meeting on Syria in the Astana format. Delegations from the guarantor countries - Russia, Turkey, Iran - as well as representatives of the Syrian government and the Syrian opposition will take part in the talks. Representatives of the UN, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq are expected to arrive as observers," the report said.


The agenda includes changes in the regional situation around Syria and the situation on the ground, efforts for an integrated settlement in the Arab country, counterterrorism issues, confidence-building measures, including the release of hostages and the search for missing persons, the humanitarian situation, mobilization of the international community to promote post-conflict reconstruction in Syria and creating conditions for the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland.


"On the first day, four-party consultations of the deputy foreign ministers of Iran, Russia, Syria and Turkey to discuss progress on the draft roadmap for the normalization of Syrian-Turkish relations, as well as bilateral and trilateral consultations of the countries participating in the Astana process are expected. "The second day will include further consultations, a plenary session and a press conference," explained in the department.


In addition, a regular meeting of the working group on the release of detainees and hostages, the transfer of bodies of the dead and the search for the missing with the participation of representatives of guarantor countries, the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross is planned during the negotiations.
