Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday at a meeting with Uzbek leader Shavkat Mirziyoyev once again congratulated him on his victory in the presidential election and praised Mirziyoyev for his services as head of state.
Before the meeting began, the two leaders shook hands and embraced. "I want to congratulate you on your convincing victory in the election, you and I have already said many times, at your first steps as president, that there is a big and very difficult work to be done, but you are doing well," Putin said.
"You are moving forward confidently, you are raising the country, you have a result, people can see it, feel it," continued the president. According to him, the results of the presidential elections in Uzbekistan show that people trust Mirziyoyev. "I sincerely congratulate you on this and wish you success in the next period of your presidency," Putin concluded.
He also expressed confidence that cooperation between Russia and Uzbekistan would boost opportunities and the well-being of citizens.
In late October, presidential elections were held in Uzbekistan. Five candidates, including Mirziyoyev, ran for this post. Mirziyoyev was re-elected for a new five-year term, receiving more than 80 percent of the vote. Mirziyoyev was first elected president of Uzbekistan in a special election in 2016 following the death of former head of state Islam Karimov (who had led the country since 1989).
