Azerbaijani Foreign Minister and new Russian Ambassador hold talks on regional situation

18 July 2023

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Ceyhun Bayramov and Russia's newly appointed ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mikhail Yevdokimov, held talks in Baku to discuss the regional situation and the bilateral agenda. The Azerbaijani foreign ministry's press service reported on Monday about the discussions.

"Minister Bayramov congratulated Ambassador Yevdokimov on his appointment and wished him success in his diplomatic activities in Azerbaijan. The ambassador expressed his commitment to further develop the longstanding friendly relations between the two countries during his tenure," the report reads.

The discussions between Bayramov and Yevdokimov covered various topics, including the regional situation and the Azerbaijani-Armenian peace process. They also discussed cooperation within international organizations.

The Azerbaijani foreign ministry emphasized that the recognition of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in reference to the position of the Armenian side, does not align with the agreements in place. They pointed out that statements about a "tense humanitarian situation" in the region due to the activity of the Lachin border checkpoint distort the reality on the ground.

Regarding the "rights and security" of Armenian residents in Karabakh, Minister Bayramov noted that these issues will be addressed within the framework of Azerbaijan's national legislation. He also highlighted the initiative for dialogue with Armenian residents as part of the resolution process.
