Baghdad Denounces US Strikes as Breach of Iraqi Sovereignty

26 December 2023

The Iraqi government has condemned the recent US military strikes on its territory, declaring them a violation of the nation's sovereignty.

"The Iraqi government condemns what happened at dawn on December 26, 2023, when Iraqi military targets were attacked by the US side under the pretext of retaliation, resulting in the death of 1 person and the injury of 18 others, including civilians," stated a release from Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani's press service, published on Facebook (banned in Russia; owned by Meta Corporation, recognized as extremist in Russia).

"This is clearly a hostile and unconstructive act," the statement emphasized, citing the damage inflicted on relations between the two countries and the gross violation of Iraqi sovereignty.

Earlier, the US Central Command of the Armed Forces (CENTCOM) reported strikes on facilities of the Shiite group Kataib Hezbollah within Iraqi territory, purportedly in response to attacks on coalition forces in Iraq and Syria. White House National Security Council press chief Adrienne Watson addressed the incident, stating, "The group's attack in northern Iraq left three US servicemen wounded, one of them in serious condition."

Additionally, recent reports from Shafaq News detailed a drone attack with explosives on a US military base in Erbil, the administrative center of Iraqi Kurdistan. The Shiite movement Islamic Resistance of Iraq claimed responsibility for the attack and announced strikes on a US base near Syria's al-Omar oil field in Deir ez-Zor province.
