Bahrain Suspends Economic Relations with Israel

02 November 2023

Bahraini authorities have chosen to recall their ambassador to Israel and suspend economic relations with the Jewish state as a demonstration of solidarity with the people of Palestine in response to Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip. This decision was communicated by Bahrain's Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the parliament, in an official statement.

"The Chamber of Deputies affirms that the Israeli ambassador to Bahrain has departed from the kingdom, and Bahrain has resolved to recall its ambassador from Israel. Additionally, economic relations with Israel have been temporarily suspended," as stated in an announcement posted on the official website of Bahrain's Chamber of Deputies.

The legislature stated that this decision reaffirms Bahrain's unwavering historical support for the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. The Bahraini Chamber of Deputies emphasized that this move is driven by the need to take action to safeguard the lives of innocent individuals in the Gaza Strip and other Palestinian territories, given the ongoing hostilities, military operations, and Israeli aggression, all while international humanitarian law is being disregarded.

In September 2020, in Washington, DC, Israel signed agreements, mediated by the United States, to normalize relations with both the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, marking the inception of the Abraham Accords. Subsequently, Sudan and Morocco also announced the normalization of relations with Israel. Prior to the peace accords with the UAE and Bahrain, Israel had diplomatic relations with only two Arab countries, Egypt and Jordan.

Jordan's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman al-Safadi decided to recall the Jordanian ambassador to Israel, and he instructed the Foreign Ministry to inform the Israeli foreign ministry not to return its ambassador, who had previously left the kingdom. Furthermore, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry issued a global call for all nations to reassess their relationships with Israel and to exert pressure on Israel to halt its destructive military campaign in the Gaza Strip.
