The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported on Sunday that the situation on the border with Armenia had worsened. The relevant information is posted on the agency's Facebook page. "In the evening, the situation on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border in the Tovuz direction has again escalated. The Armenian army resumed shelling the positions of the Azerbaijani army. In response, the Azerbaijani army is taking appropriate measures", the text reads.

On Sunday afternoon, the Defense Ministry reported an attempt by Armenian armed forces units to attack the positions of the Azerbaijani army in the Tovuz direction of the border with the use of artillery and a battle ensued. According to the military department, the enemy suffered losses and retreated. As reported in Baku, two Azerbaijani soldiers were killed in the battle and five were wounded. Later, another soldier died of the wounds.

The conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh began in February 1988, when the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous region announced its secession from the Azerbaijani SSR. During the 1992-1994 armed conflict, Azerbaijan lost control of Nagorny Karabakh and seven surrounding areas. Since 1992, negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the conflict have been held within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group, led by co-chairs Russia, the United States and France.
