Bangladesh's interim government will decide on the dates for the country's parliamentary elections by September, according to Foreign Minister Touhid Hossain.
Hossain stated, “Our top priority is to carry out reforms because the system has been totally corrupted, and the institutions have been destroyed. They need to be rebuilt. All my colleagues are extremely busy restoring normalcy.”
He added that further clarity on the election schedule would be provided by September, saying, “By then, we will have more certainty about the timing of the elections.”
Hossain also emphasized that members of the interim cabinet have no political ambitions. “Once the elections are announced, we will disappear from the political arena,” he said.
According to Bangladesh’s constitution, parliamentary elections must be held within 90 days of the legislature’s dissolution. Following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation on August 5, the parliament was dissolved on August 6. The interim government last ruled the country from 2006 to 2008.
