Belousov: The Situation in Afghanistan Requires Constant Monitoring

31 May

The situation in Afghanistan necessitates continuous monitoring and reinforcement of the border with Tajikistan, along with other measures to stabilize the region, stated Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov. Speaking at a meeting of the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization) Council of Defense Ministers in Almaty, Belousov highlighted Afghanistan as the principal source of instability in the Central Asian region.

Belousov pointed out that numerous radical groups have entrenched themselves in Afghanistan and are actively promoting their ideologies in neighboring republics. He emphasized that the "risk of bandit groups and terrorism spreading beyond Afghanistan's borders is on the rise."

To address these challenges, Belousov underscored the need for "constant monitoring and timely measures" to stabilize the region, specifically citing the importance of fortifying the Tajik-Afghan border.
