Biden arrives in Bethlehem to meet Abbas

15 July 2022

US President Joe Biden arrived in Bethlehem on Friday to meet with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, Al Arabiya reports.

Security for Biden's visit to the West Bank is provided by 1,500 Palestinian security forces. The day before, banners appeared in Bethlehem condemning Israeli actions in the Palestinian territories. One of them, addressed to the head of the White House, reads: "Mr. President, this is apartheid".

At this moment, the official welcoming ceremony began at the residence of the Palestinian leader. Journalists covering the talks have been forbidden to ask any questions about the outcome of the talks.

Al Jazeera reported that many of the journalists were wearing black T-shirts with the portrait of Shireen Abu Akleh, a Qatari satellite TV correspondent killed by an Israeli sniper on May 11, to draw the American president's attention to the investigation into her death as well as all those Palestinians for whose deaths at the hands of the Israeli military have never been held accountable.
