11 May 2023

The Russian side is interested in the project of construction of the railroad and a large hydropower plant on the territory of Kyrgyzstan. First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan Aseyin Isayev said this on the air of Birinchi Radio (First Radio) in Bishkek on Thursday commenting the results of the official visit of President Sadyr Zhaparov to Moscow on May 7-9.

"During the president's visit to Russia, two major economic projects were discussed," he said.

According to him, the first project is the construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railroad, which would connect China with European countries. The second project is the construction of a large hydropower plant Kambar-Ata-1, which Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have previously expressed their intentions to participate in.

According to Isayev, the Kyrgyz side does not object to Russia's joining the construction of the railroad and the hydropower plant. At the same time, he stressed that both of these objects will be built in any case.

Currently, Chinese experts have completed a feasibility study for the construction of the PRC-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway. Its length will be about 450 kilometers, more than half of which will be on Kyrgyz territory. Kambar-Ata-1 HPP will be located on the Naryn River, its approximate capacity will be about 1.9 thousand MW. The cost of these two projects has not yet been announced.
