Agreements to normalize relations between Israel and Arab countries cannot be a substitute for resolving the Middle East conflict, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday at a press conference in Rabat, where he is on a visit.
"I just visited Jerusalem and Ramallah. And one of the considerations that I made in Jerusalem [in talks] with my Israeli counterparts and in Ramallah with [Palestinian President Mahmoud] Abbas is, of course, the continued support of the United States for a two-state solution [to the Middle East conflict]. This is an outcome that will meet the aspirations of the Palestinian people and their right to a state of their own, as well as, of course, ensuring Israel's security and its viability as a Jewish democratic state. The normalization agreements and the work that Morocco and others are doing with Israel are not a substitute for this outcome [of a two-state solution], but they can, I think, strengthen it," he said.
