The Middle East has experienced heightened tensions following the infiltration of fighters from the Palestinian  movement Hamas into Israeli territory on October 7, 2023. The group claimed the attack as a response to Israeli actions concerning the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. In response, Israel imposed a complete blockade on Gaza and initiated airstrikes on the Strip as well as parts of Lebanon and Syria before launching a ground operation within the enclave.
