Russian Presidential Special Envoy for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov held a meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali. During the meeting, the parties discussed the situation in the Gaza Strip and emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire.
"During the conversation, there was an engaging exchange of views on the evolving situation in and around the Gaza Strip. Simultaneously, the imperative for an early cessation of hostilities and the provision of humanitarian assistance to the civilian population affected by the unprecedented escalation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone was emphasized," stated the Russian MFA in a statement on its website.
The situation in the Middle East escalated sharply after Hamas fighters from the Gaza Strip infiltrated into Israel on October 7. Hamas termed the attack a response to Israeli actions against the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. In response, Israel imposed a complete blockade on Gaza and initiated a military operation in the enclave. Additionally, retaliatory strikes are occurring in border areas of Lebanon and Syria. Clashes are also unfolding in the West Bank.
