Bogdanov discussed the situation in Libya and Syria with the Qatari Ambassador

04 June 2020

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and Qatar's Ambassador to Moscow Fahad al-Attiyah discussed the strengthening of relations between the two countries and the situation in Libya and Syria, the Russian Foreign Ministry reports.

"During the conversation, topical issues of strengthening mutually beneficial Russian-Qatari relations were discussed on the basis of relevant decisions and agreements reached earlier at the highest level," the message of the Russian MFA reads.

It is noted that during the conversation, the current regional agenda was also discussed, with a focus on the situation in Syria and Libya.
The armed conflict in Syria has been going on since 2011. At the end of 2017, the victory over the terrorist group ISIS (banned in Russia) in Syria and Iraq was announced. In some areas of the countries, the cleansing of militants continues. At the moment, the political settlement, reconstruction of Syria, as well as the return of refugees are at the forefront.

After the overthrow and death of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya effectively ceased to function as a single state. Now the country is ruled by dual power. The East is ruled by the people's elected Parliament, and the West, in the capital Tripoli, the Government of National Accord, formed with the support of the UN and the European Union, led by Fayez Sarraj. The authorities in the Eastern part of the country operate independently of Tripoli and cooperate with the Libyan national army led by Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who has not stopped trying to capture Tripoli since April 2019.
