Mikhail Bogdanov, Russia’s Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister, held discussions with Kazem Jalali, Iran's Ambassador to Moscow, on the evolving situation in Syria. Both sides agreed to maintain close coordination on Middle Eastern issues, according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The talks focused on the urgent need for stabilization in Syria, emphasizing the preservation of peace and unity, and the prevention of violence and bloodshed. The ministry highlighted the commitment to continue close diplomatic coordination between Moscow and Tehran on pressing regional matters.
During the meeting, the importance of advancing a comprehensive resolution to the Syrian conflict was underscored, with respect for Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity as central principles.
The discussions come amid a significant escalation in Syria. On November 27, opposition forces launched a large-scale offensive against the Syrian army in the provinces of Aleppo and Idlib. By December 7, these forces had seized control of Aleppo, Hama, Daraa, and Homs, and on December 8, they entered Damascus after the withdrawal of Syrian government troops. President Bashar al-Assad resigned and left the country. On December 10, Mohammed al-Bashir, leader of the opposition-formed Salvation Government in Idlib, announced his appointment as head of Syria's transitional government, which will remain in place until March 1, 2025.
