Bogdanov Engages with Gabon's Ambassador on Stabilization Efforts in the Country

23 January

Deputy Foreign Minister, Special Representative of the Russian President for the Middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov met with Gabon's Ambassador to Moscow Joanna Rose Mamyaka to discuss the ongoing efforts of the new authorities in Libreville to stabilize the situation in Gabon. The meeting was initiated by the Gabonese diplomat and covered key aspects of the transition period and Gabon's relationships with neighboring states.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that the talks delved into the emerging situation in the Gabonese Republic and the measures taken by the new authorities to ensure stability during this transitional phase. The discussions also emphasized the importance of maintaining constructive ties with neighboring countries in the subregion.

The ministry further noted that the meeting addressed current issues related to the continued development of the traditionally friendly relations between Russia and Gabon. The focus was on activating mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas, including trade, economic, investment, and humanitarian sectors.

In December 2023, Gabon's membership in ECOWAS was suspended following the overthrow of President Ali Ben Bongo Ondimba. The change in leadership occurred after a group of high-ranking Gabonese military officers announced they had taken power, overturning the results of the August 26 presidential election. The transitional period, led by interim head of government Raymond Ndong Sima, is anticipated to last one to two years.
