Bogdanov met with a well-known Libyan public and political figure

25 December 2019

Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov received Aref Ali Nayed, a Libyan public and political figure.

According to the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry, during the conversation, the main attention was paid to developments in Libya and the prospects for settling the crisis in the country.

At the same time, the Russian side noted the need to establish an intra-Libyan inclusive dialogue as soon as possible in order to form unified competent government bodies in Libya.

After the overthrow and death of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya is ruled by two rival governments: the East of the country is controlled by people's elected Parliament, and the West, with the capital in Tripoli, is ruled by the Government of National Accord, led by Fayez al-Sarraj, formed with the support of the United Nations and the European Union.  The authorities in the Eastern part of the country operate independently of Tripoli and cooperate with Haftar's army, which has been trying to capture Tripoli since April.
