BRICS countries confirmed their readiness to cooperate in the fight against coronavirus

The Foreign Ministers of the BRICS member states confirmed their readiness to cooperate in developing measures against the coronavirus, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Friday at a press conference following a meeting of BRICS Foreign Ministers in the format of a videoconference.

"We confirmed today that this area [the fight against the coronavirus] remains a priority," he said. " The other members of the association actively support the efforts that Moscow and Beijing are making in this area. All of them appreciated the statement made by our Chinese colleague and me that we are interested in the broadest possible cooperation."

The Minister drew attention to the fact that the coronavirus did not trigger such cooperation within the framework of BRICS. "Back in 2015, at the Ufa summit, the heads of state put forward an initiative to establish cooperation in the fight against infectious diseases, and in 2018, at the summit in South Africa, our South African partners proposed an initiative to cooperate in the development of vaccines," Lavrov recalled.

According to him, "it is thanks to such visionary decisions of previous summits that the BRICS member countries are now well prepared to realize their potential in the fight against the coronavirus."
