Burkina Faso Claims Foiling Coup Attempt, Reports Say

28 September 2023

Burkina Faso's authorities have reported the prevention of an attempted coup d'état in the country on September 26, according to Reuters. Security forces have detained some individuals, including both military and civilians, involved in the rebellion, with efforts ongoing to locate the remaining individuals. Further details regarding the incident have not been provided.

It's worth noting that Burkina Faso experienced a coup led by a group of military officers, including Captain Ibrahim Traore, on September 30 of the previous year. This coup resulted in the removal of Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba from the presidency. Damiba, who had assumed power in January 2022 through a separate coup, voluntarily stepped down as president on October 2. Captain Traore subsequently took the oath of office as the transitional president of Burkina Faso on October 21.
