The population of the Egyptian capital has reached 25 million, Governor of Cairo Governorate Khaled Abdel-Aal announced on Wednesday.
"Cairo's population is 25 million people, this includes both locals and expats," said the governor, whose words were quoted by the Al-Balad news portal.
Geographically, the capital is located on the territory of two provinces - Cairo and Giza. Every day tens of thousands of people flock to the metropolis to work, including those from neighboring areas. The city, which is the most densely populated region of the country, can no longer cope with such an influx of residents. Traffic jams, pollution, and other socio-economic problems have long been part and parcel of life in Cairo. According to the governor, such a high population puts a heavy burden on officials as well.
In these conditions, a new administrative capital, which has not yet been officially named, has been under construction in the desert 25 km from Cairo for several years; government and many state institutions, as well as foreign embassies, are to move there.
Egypt's population currently stands at 104 million people.
