03 May 2023

A four-party meeting of the foreign ministers of Turkey, Russia, Syria and Iran may be held in Moscow on May 10, according to Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Wednesday. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said this on Wednesday on the air of the NTV channel.

"Earlier we received proposals from the Russian side regarding the meeting. As of today, we see that it may take place on May 10 at the level of [foreign] ministers. The venue is Moscow," he said.

Cavusoglu recalled that earlier "technical meetings at the level of defense ministers and intelligence chiefs" were held. "We are discussing in detail the improvement of security in Syria, the fight against terrorism. In this context, there have been historic proposals from Russia," he said.

Regarding the participation of Iran's foreign minister in the meeting, Cavusoglu noted that this issue has not yet been resolved. This is due to the fact that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi is going on a tour to Africa, and it is not clear who will be able to participate in this meeting and whether Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian himself will attend.

The process of normalization of relations between Ankara and Damascus was launched on December 28, 2022, in Moscow, when consultations of the heads of military departments of Russia, Syria and Turkey took place. At the meeting, an agreement was reached to create a joint trilateral commission. These consultations are to be followed by a meeting at the level of foreign ministers, the agenda of which will include negotiations between the presidents of Turkey and Syria - Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad. Later, it was reported that Iran would take part in the consultations at the level of foreign ministers.
