02 July

At least 70 militants from terrorist groups have been eliminated in the Lake Chad region by government forces from Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad. This information was disclosed by Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, spokesperson for the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF).

"The mission was carried out as part of Operation Lake Sanity 2, with extensive use of air power,"  - Colonel Abdullahi stated, as quoted by Nigerian Channels Television. - "Along with the eliminated militants, five terrorist camps and eight vehicles were destroyed." Abdullahi added that the main strikes targeted islands off the coasts of Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad, where militant positions were identified. Chad's newly created elite special forces unit, known as the Rapid Support Force, played a significant role in the ground fighting.

The Lake Chad region has become a major hub for terrorist bases in Africa south of the Sahara Desert. Boko Haram and the Islamic State's West Africa Province (ISWAP, part of the Islamic State (IS) group, banned in Russia) maintain camps there.

Established in 1994, the Multinational Joint Task Force includes units from Benin and Niger, along with Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad. The group is headquartered in the Chadian capital of N'Djamena.
