China's Foreign Ministry Calls on the UNSC to Help End the Israel-Hamas Conflict

17 October 2023

China supports the United Nations Security Council taking effective action to facilitate a ceasefire between Israel and Palestine and strongly denounces any actions that result in harm to civilians. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi conveyed this stance during a phone call with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, as stated in a release on the Chinese Foreign Ministry's website.

"In the present circumstances, it is important for the United Nations Security Council to fulfill its rightful role in expediting the cessation of hostilities," the diplomat emphasized. Wang Yi reaffirmed China's opposition to and condemnation of any actions that result in harm to civilians and breach international humanitarian law. He underscored that Beijing "will remain aligned with international moral principles and extend support to the Palestinian people in reclaiming their legitimate national rights."

"China values the proactive mediation and humanitarian coordination undertaken by Egypt, as well as its support for Arab and Islamic nations in establishing a shared stance and articulating a united perspective. We stand prepared to collaborate with all stakeholders to facilitate the reinitiation of talks regarding the two-state solution and endeavor to construct a more comprehensive international consensus," the ministry expressed in a statement.

The United Nations Security Council did not approve the Russian draft resolution addressing the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. While five countries voted in favor, the document failed to secure the requisite number of votes.
