Chinese Foreign Ministry Challenges US on Double Standards on Muslim Rights

13 March

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has urged the United States to cease its practice of double standards regarding Muslim rights, particularly in response to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's comments on the suffering of Muslims in various regions, including the Gaza Strip and China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Speaking at a briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin criticized what he perceived as US "political shows" and inconsistent stances on human rights issues. He specifically addressed Blinken's remarks about the plight of Muslims during Ramadan, highlighting the contrasting situations in Xinjiang and Gaza.

"The situation in Xinjiang is peaceful, and there is no conflict there. The conflict is in Gaza. Muslims in Xinjiang have not experienced starvation, displacement, or killings. It is the millions of Muslims in the Gaza Strip who are suffering from these atrocities," Wang Wenbin clarified.

He further called on the US to abandon its double standards on human rights issues, cease its political grandstanding on humanitarian concerns in Gaza, and refrain from unilaterally hindering the United Nations Security Council's efforts to broker a ceasefire and end the conflict in Gaza.

Wang Wenbin also challenged the US to move beyond empty rhetoric about Ramadan and take concrete actions to alleviate the suffering of Muslims in Gaza.

Earlier, Blinken had noted the suffering of many Muslims during Ramadan, mentioning the plight of Uighurs in Xinjiang, Rohingya in Bangladesh, and Palestinians in Gaza.
