CIS observers hope for an invitation to the presidential election in Turkmenistan

15 February 2022

Observers from the CIS are planning to take part in monitoring the early presidential election in Turkmenistan, First Deputy Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee Leonid Anfimov told reporters on Tuesday.

"We are planning. And, of course, I think we will get such an invitation in the near future, and we have already started to form this mission," Anfimov was quoted by BelTA as saying.

On Monday, the election campaign for the early presidential election started in Turkmenistan. On February 12, the Central Election Commission (CEC) announced the date of the elections for March 12th, after Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov had announced at the session of the upper house of the Parliament that it was time to give opportunities to the young. He stressed that he reached the age of the Prophet Muhammad (63) two years ago, and now he has made "a difficult decision".

The Turkmen leader's son Serdar, whom the ruling party has nominated as a presidential candidate, said he would implement his father's initiatives. The ruling Democratic Party supported his candidacy unanimously at an extraordinary congress on Sunday.
