CMD: the situation in Afghanistan could lead to the "pushing out" of IS to Tajikistan

24 December 2021

The complicated situation in Afghanistan caused by the change of power and measures of stabilization taken by the Taliban (banned in Russia) may result in "pushing out" of the militants of the terrorist group Islamic State (banned in Russia) into the border areas, in particular, into Tajikistan. In this connection, the Central Military District (CMD) is directing all efforts to increase the combat readiness of the troops, according to the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper, following a conversation with the commander of the CMD troops, Alexander Lapin.

"The militants of the Islamic State, taking advantage of the aggravation of the political and socio-economic situation connected with the change of power, have increased their terrorist activity one and a half times, especially in the northern provinces of the country. Measures taken by the Taliban to stabilize the situation, including special operations, can lead to the " pushing out" of ISIS fighters into the border areas, which, accordingly, will cause an increase in the activity of gangs in the Tajik direction. Based on the existing situation the main efforts in the Central Military District were concentrated on raising the combat readiness of the troops, rearming them to the newest and modernized samples of armament and military hardware and mastering them," the report says.

Special attention in 2021 was paid to the improvement of the combat power of Russian military bases in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

According to Lapin, the Central Military District "stepped up efforts in interspecific training of troops taking into account the accumulated combat experience in the Syrian Arab Republic, actively mastering new, unconventional ways of combat operations in a rapidly changing environment". In total, more than 200 exercises of various levels and scales were conducted in 2021, including one with exploratory purposes and three unplanned.

The Central Military District is stationed in the Volga, Ural and Siberian federal districts and 29 subjects of Russia. The district is structurally comprised of several overseas facilities: Russian military bases in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, as well as units on the territory of Kazakhstan. The headquarters is located in Yekaterinburg.
