Collective Security Treaty Organization concerned about the threat of placing weapons in space

Permanent representatives of the member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization at the United Nations published a statement «On supporting the multilateral initiative on the non-deployment of weapons in outer space in the first place.» The document citing the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry, in particular, points out serious concern over the growing threat of weapons being deployed in outer space and turning it into an arena of armed confrontation.

 

«The CSTO states carry out activities on the exploration and use of outer space in full compliance with the norms and principles of international law, in the interest of developing international cooperation and mutual understanding, maintaining international peace and security.

 

They re-emphasize the crucial importance of the immediate adoption of practical measures to prevent an arms race in outer space, the most effective of which is the development of a legally binding adreement containing reliable safeguards against the placement of weapons into space,» the statement reads. Recall, the CSTO unites such countries as Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
