Conference on refugees opened in Damascus

The International Conference on Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons opened on Wednesday in Damascus. It is attended by delegations from 27 countries, including Russia, China, Iran, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, the Sultanate of Oman and Pakistan, as well as representatives of the UN and 12 non-governmental organizations. The task of the forum is to work out a program of practical steps for the return of more than 6.5 million Syrian refugees to their homeland, most of whom are in neighboring countries.


The Russian delegation, which includes specialists from more than 30 ministries and departments, is headed by Alexander Lavrentyev, the Special Representative of the Russian President for the Syrian settlement.


The forum is moderated by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Syria Ayman Sousan. On Wednesday there will be four plenary sessions, devoted to different aspects of the refugee problem, and three round tables. On Thursday, the conference participants will visit the reception center for internally displaced persons in Hirjil near Damascus and several medical institutions that serve them, and in the evening the final declaration will be adopted.
