02 September 2022

The death toll from Friday's bombing of a mosque in the western Afghan province of Guzar has risen to 28, with at least 45 people wounded, Al Jazeera TV reports.

Earlier the Afghan TOLOnews TV channel, referring to the local authorities, reported that as a result of the explosion at least 18 people were killed and 23 were wounded. The Associated Press News agency, citing a doctor, reported 21 victims.

According to the local authorities, the bomb was detonated by a suicide bomber. Imam Khatib Muhaib Urrahman Ansari of the Maulawi mosque was among the victims of the incident.

In recent months a series of bombings, armed attacks, and shootings occurred in the provinces of Afghanistan, including the metropolitan region, killing both supporters of the Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation) that seized power in the country, as well as civilians. The Islamic State in Khorasan, an offshoot of the Islamic State terrorist organization (banned in Russia), claimed responsibility for many of these incidents.
