11 October 2022

A delegation from Kyrgyzstan has arrived in Tajikistan to discuss the demarcation of the common border. The state news agency of Tajikistan Khovar reported this on Tuesday, citing data from the press service of the administration of the Sughd province of the republic.

"The subject of the negotiations, which will last four days, will be the demarcation at the joint border," the press service said.

The composition of the Kyrgyz and Tajik delegations at the talks is not specified.

In mid-September, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan had a military conflict on the border. Fighting with heavy weapons began on September 14 in the Kech area of the Tajik enclave of Vorukh and continued until September 17 in separate sections of the common border. According to the Tajik side, more than 40 citizens of the republic were killed in the conflict. Bishkek reported 59 Kyrgyz citizens were killed.

The border between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan is more than 980 km long and since the collapse of the Soviet Union there have been dozens of disputed sections. To date, more than 660 km of the border between the two countries have been identified and agreed upon in the process of delimitation and demarcation. In some areas, disputes and conflicts arise from time to time between residents of the border areas.
