Military escalation in Libya will decrease in the next few days thanks to the efforts of Russian diplomacy, Deputy Chairman of the Government of National Accord (GNA) of Libya Ahmed Maiteeq told RIA Novosti.
Deputy Chairman of the Government of National Accord (GNA) of Libya Ahmed Maiteeq arrived in Moscow on Wednesday morning, where he is holding talks at the Russian Foreign Ministry.
According to the Libyan politician, he also held "numerous meetings with representatives of the Russian Defense Ministry, as well as security agencies."
Deputy Chairman noted that the government in Tripoli "today is convinced that Russia is a very important partner for establishing stability in Libya."
"In the coming period, the next few days, we will see a sharp decrease in military escalation thanks to Russian diplomacy, which will work together with us to reduce this escalation," Maiteeq told RIA Novosti.
The UN mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said earlier that the warring Libyan parties agreed to resume negotiations of the military Committee (5+5) on a truce in accordance with the draft agreement presented to the UN during the talks on February 23.
After the overthrow and death of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya effectively ceased to function as a single state. Now the country is ruled by dual power. The East is ruled by the people's elected Parliament, and the West, in the capital Tripoli, - the Government of National Accord, formed with the support of the UN and the European Union, led by Fayez Sarraj. The authorities in the Eastern part of the country operate independently of Tripoli and cooperate with the Libyan national army led by Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who has not stopped trying to capture Tripoli since April 2019.
