Deputy Prime Minister of Jordan discussed the situation on the border with Syria with Lavrentiev

Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi held talks in Amman on Wednesday with a Russian delegation headed by Russian Presidential Special Representative for the Syrian Settlement Alexander Lavrentiev, Petra news agency reported. According to its information, the sides discussed ways to strengthen security and stability in the southern regions of Syria.


"Jordan is facing serious threats caused by drug smuggling from Syrian territory, terrorism and the presence of militants in southern Syria," Amman's foreign minister said. - "The Kingdom's authorities are taking all the necessary measures to combat illicit drug trafficking and are ready to work with Russia to stabilize the situation in the border regions."


Al-Safadi recalled that "Russia and Jordan are the guarantors of the 2018 agreements on de-escalation and local reconciliation in southern Syria." He affirmed that the kingdom "attaches paramount importance to finding a political solution to the crisis in Syria and favors a settlement that would meet the aspirations of its people and contribute to the eradication of terrorism, the protection of territorial integrity and unity, and the creation of conditions for the voluntary return of refugees".


For his part, Lavrentiev stressed the importance of Jordanian-Russian cooperation in resolving the problems in southern Syria and finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.


According to the agency, the sides welcomed the adoption of UNSC resolution 2672, which "will facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid across the border to Syria and meet the needs of more than 4.1 million Syrians".
