Bassirou Diomaye Faye took the presidential oath, officially assuming the role of Senegal's President in an inauguration ceremony attended by a host of dignitaries, including African leaders and heads of state. The event was broadcast live by the Senego news portal.
At 44 years old, Faye has become the nation's fifth and youngest president, succeeding Macky Sall, who served two terms and chose not to run in the recent election. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the International Conference Center in Diamniadio, located 36 kilometers from the capital, Dakar.
Faye secured his victory in the March 24 presidential election with a decisive 54.25 percent of the vote in the first round. On March 29, the Constitutional Council of Senegal confirmed him as the new president, as none of the 18 unsuccessful candidates contested the election's proceedings or results.
Diomaye Faye's electoral campaign emphasized reinforcing Senegal's sovereignty by revitalizing state institutions. He also advocated for the introduction of a national currency to replace the West African CFA franc, which is partially governed by the Bank of France and is currently in circulation across eight West African countries.
The presidential tenure lasts for five years, and the Constitution restricts the number of terms an individual can serve as head of state to two.
