Egypt Accuses Israel of Lacking Will for Reconciliation Amid Jenin Events

28 August

Egypt has accused Israel of lacking the political will to de-escalate tensions, citing the actions of the Israeli army in Palestine in the West Bank, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“Egypt warns that Israeli special operations and deliberate attacks on civilians in the West Bank, combined with the ongoing aggression in the Gaza Strip and the invasion of Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, will lead to serious consequences and further complicate the situation, demonstrating Israel's lack of political will for de-escalation and reconciliation,” the statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry read. The ministry also described the actions of the Israeli army in the West Bank as a “systematic violation of international law” and strongly condemned them.

On Wednesday night, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a counter-terrorism operation in the West Bank towns of Jenin and Tulkarm. At least nine Palestinians were killed and several dozen were injured during the operation. Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz justified the military's actions as necessary to dismantle “the terrorist infrastructure created by Iran in these areas” and emphasized the need to “fight this threat as decisively as the terrorist structures in Gaza, including the temporary evacuation of Palestinian residents and any necessary measures.”
