Egypt intends to cooperate with Russia and other countries on climate change under UNFCCC

28 September 2022

Egypt will cooperate on climate change issues with Russia and all interested parties within the framework of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which will be held in Sharm el-Sheikh in 2022, Egyptian Ambassador to Moscow Nazih El-Nagari said on Wednesday at a plenary session of the Global Financial Forum (Ecumene 2022) at the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).

"Egypt will host the 27th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Sharm el-Sheikh from November 16 to 19 this year. I can say that this is a very important event," he pointed out. - "Egypt will interact with all parties concerned, including the Russian Federation. We are going to consolidate political will and discuss the fight against climate change at the highest level."
The ambassador noted that in order to solve climate problems it is necessary "to consolidate forces not only at the level of states, but also at the national level of all interested parties."

El-Nagari drew attention to the fact that geopolitical tensions in the world make it difficult to find common solutions. "However, this is not a reason for delay and for not fulfilling the commitments made, because the consequences would be unacceptable for the entire international community," he explained.

The diplomat stressed that in order to achieve the goals, it is necessary "to accelerate and move from the negotiation phase to the concrete action phase." "The global paradigm is changing. We are moving away from our commitments to sustainable development, to combating climate change," he pointed out. - "I can say that the latest UN report contains very alarming assessments of the effects of climate change. We see that the time to take action is rapidly running out. If we want to achieve our 'temperature' goals, we have to step up."

Climate initiatives

Egypt's presidency will launch a number of important initiatives to combat climate change, the ambassador said.

"Our presidency of the Conference of the Parties will launch a number of initiatives with international partners on a range of issues," he pointed out. - "These include energy access for Africa, sustainable cities, food, agriculture and good living standards in an era of climate change.

The ambassador noted that Egypt is trying to set an example of successful climate action at the national level. "Last May, we launched a national strategy until 2050 to combat climate change, which covers energy, agriculture, transportation and water resources. Egypt has also set specific targets to reduce emissions in energy production and energy dissemination by 43%," he explained.

In addition, El-Nagari stressed that Egypt will try to turn the conference into a platform where "all parties can find solutions to their differences based on the common goal of combating climate change."

"That's why we've set aside a number of thematic days to discuss specific issues. We will have round tables, interactive meetings, parallel formats, where experts will be able to share their experiences with the widest possible audience. We will talk about climate science funding and youth projects, decarbonization, adaptation, agriculture, water resources, gender equality, biodiversity and solutions to existing problems," he noted.

Ecumene 2022 is taking place at the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow from 28 to 30 September 2022 with the support of the UN Secretariat, the All-Russian Society for Nature Conservation, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the UN Environment Programme, the UNEP Finance Initiative, the National Geographic Society, the World Bank and Gazprombank. One of the main objectives of the forum is to find ways to overcome the challenges of climate change.
