Egypt Rejects Pressure on Palestinians to Leave Gaza, Calls for Immediate Ceasefire

09 January

Cairo opposes any attempts to pressure Palestinians into leaving the Gaza Strip, Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said during a joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

"We [Egyptian authorities] reject any means of pressuring the Palestinians to displace them from their own lands," stated Shoukry, as quoted by Al-Qahira Al-Ikhbariya. He emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave, noting that "the continuation of the [Israeli] occupation is one of the main causes of instability in the region."

Shoukry further disclosed that discussions with Baerbock encompassed "the restoration of political prospects related to the decision to establish two independent states, including the Palestinian state." Additionally, talks focused on the flow of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza and increasing its volume.

Post-meeting, Baerbock is set to visit the town of Al-Arish in the Sinai Peninsula, near the Gaza border, with plans to inspect the Rafah crossing point. This crossing serves as a vital entry point for humanitarian supplies designated for the population of the Palestinian enclave.
