Egypt Sees BRICS Membership as Avenue for Cooperation with Iran

27 February

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry emphasized the potential for cooperation between Egypt and Iran within the BRICS association during a meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir Abdollahian.

"Participation in the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the BRICS group presents an opportunity for collaboration between Egypt and Iran," Shoukry stated, as quoted in a statement on the Iranian Foreign Ministry's Telegram channel. He further underscored the unity between Egypt and Iran in supporting the Palestinian cause and advocating against injustices inflicted upon the Palestinian people.

Abdollahian echoed Shoukry's sentiments, emphasizing the importance of continued joint efforts to address the Palestinian crisis and promptly provide humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. He highlighted that collaboration between Iran and Egypt, particularly in supporting Palestine, could positively impact the broader region's development.

Despite not having diplomatic relations, Egypt and Iran officially became full members of BRICS on January 1, 2024. Diplomatic ties between the two nations were severed in 1980 following the Islamic Revolution in Iran, exacerbated by Egypt's granting asylum to deposed Iranian Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and its peace agreement with Israel. Although efforts to normalize relations began in 2010, official restoration has yet to occur. However, in May 2023, the Iranian parliament announced preparations to resume diplomatic relations in the near future.
