Egyptian MFA: Recognition of Palestine Paves Way for Independent State

22 May

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a special statement affirming that the recognition of the State of Palestine represents a pivotal stride in bolstering international endeavors aimed at establishing an independent Palestinian state. The statement applauded the official acknowledgment of Palestine by three European nations - Ireland, Norway, and Spain.

According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, the formal recognition by these countries of the State of Palestine "constitutes a significant advancement in supporting global initiatives aimed at fostering political opportunities for the realization of an independent Palestinian state." Egypt urged other nations to follow suit, emphasizing the importance of upholding principles of justice and recognizing the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, who have endured over 70 years of Israeli occupation.

Furthermore, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry called upon the United Nations and other international bodies to promptly intervene in the ongoing crisis in Gaza. It urged for measures to safeguard the residents of the enclave, address the humanitarian plight in the region, and halt Israeli military operations, particularly in the vicinity of Rafah, situated in the southern part of Gaza.

Earlier on Wednesday, Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris announced his country's decision to recognize Palestine as an independent state. During a press conference in Dublin, he underscored that "the action taken today, in conjunction with Norway and Spain, underscores [Palestine's] legitimate entitlement to statehood." He added, "It also reaffirms our unwavering support for the two-state solution, the sole viable path towards peace and security for Israel, Palestine, and their inhabitants."
