Egypt's President Instructs Prime Minister to Form New Government

03 June

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has directed the incumbent Prime Minister, Mustafa Madbouly, to form a new government. This announcement was made by the president's spokesman, Ahmed Fahmy.

"Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi received the country's Prime Minister, Mustafa Madbouly, who presented the head of state with the current government's resignation petition," read the statement published on Fahmy's Facebook page. El-Sisi instructed Madbouly to form a new government, noting that the current cabinet will continue to fulfill its duties until the new one is sworn in.

No information has been provided about the deadline for the prime minister to present a draft of the new government composition. The main objectives of the new cabinet should be to "ensure Egypt's national security, continue economic reforms, and further development in the fields of health, education, and culture," according to the statement.

On April 2, el-Sisi took the oath of office before members of the House of Representatives (the lower house of parliament), officially beginning his third term as head of state. According to Article 146 of the Egyptian Constitution, the elected president appoints the prime minister and tasks him with forming a new government, which must receive a vote of confidence from parliament within 30 days.
