Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Russian President Vladimir Putin have underscored the urgent need to de-escalate the growing tensions in the Middle East, warning of the potential dangers these conflicts pose to global security. This came in a statement released by Egypt’s presidential office following their talks during the BRICS Summit in Kazan.
The two leaders reached an agreement on the importance of reducing the escalating crisis in the Middle East, acknowledging the severe impact it could have on both regional and international security.
El-Sisi called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon and emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to both regions.
The statement also noted that the presidents discussed other global issues, including the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. El-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s stance, emphasizing the importance of finding diplomatic solutions and reaching political settlements to maintain global peace and security.
The 16th BRICS Summit, a major event under Russia’s current presidency of the bloc, is being held in Kazan from October 22 to 24. BRICS was originally founded by Brazil, Russia, India, and China in 2006, with South Africa joining in 2011. On January 1, 2024, Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia will officially become full members. This summit is the first to include the new members, with over 30 countries represented, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
