Immediate action is needed to provide sufficient humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis threatening civilian lives, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said during a meeting in Cairo with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
"A ceasefire must be promptly implemented in Gaza, given the enclave's dire humanitarian situation and the looming threat of famine endangering innocent civilians... Urgent measures are required to deliver adequate humanitarian aid to the enclave," el-Sisi was quoted by his spokesman, Ahmed Fahmy, as stating on his Facebook page.(banned in Russia; owned by Meta Corporation, which is recognized as extremist in Russia).
El-Sisi further expressed Egypt's disapproval of the Israeli military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, citing its profoundly perilous repercussions. He emphasized the necessity of "intensive diplomatic efforts to advance the two-state solution, advocating for the establishment of an independent Palestine on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital."
Concluding the discussions, "both parties affirmed their commitment to continued coordination in the region and condemned any attempts at the forced displacement of Palestinians from their territories."
Present at the meeting on the Egyptian side were Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and the head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Directorate, Abbas Kamel.
The visit to Cairo marked the sixth Middle East tour for the US secretary of state since the escalation of conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement. Prior to Cairo, he visited Saudi Arabia, where he held talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, and he plans to proceed to Israel on Friday.
