The election campaign for Algeria's early presidential election, scheduled for September 7, has officially started. Over the next 20 days, candidates will have the opportunity to present their platforms to the public, according to the Algerian radio.
The Constitutional Court has approved three candidates: Youcef Aouchiche of the Socialist Forces Front, Abdellah Hassan Cherif of the Movement of Society for Peace, and the incumbent President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, running as an independent.
Campaign rules stipulate that candidates must avoid hate speech and discrimination. The use of foreign languages during campaigning is banned, and places of worship, state institutions, and educational facilities are prohibited for campaign activities. Additionally, candidates cannot misuse state symbols for electoral purposes.
All candidates are guaranteed equal access to authorized media outlets, with equal broadcasting time allocated. Foreign campaign contributions are also prohibited.
The campaign will conclude on September 3, followed by a three-day silence period during which opinion polls cannot be published. The Independent National Electoral Authority is overseeing both the campaign and the election. In the 2019 presidential election, Tebboune won in the first round.
